How the 8% tax calculation actually works
- 1
Start with your gross receipts
The 8% rate is computed on gross receipts — the total amount clients paid you, before platform fees, withdrawal fees, or business expenses. No receipts to track, no deductions to itemize.
- 2
Subtract the ₱250,000 exemption
A purely self-employed freelancer's first ₱250,000 of income each year is tax-free. Earn ₱250,000 or less for the year and your income tax is exactly ₱0.
- 3
Apply the flat 8% rate
Whatever remains after the exemption is taxed at a single 8% rate — no graduated brackets, no separate 3% percentage tax.
- 4
Net off what you already paid
The BIR's 1701Q is cumulative — each quarter's return nets off the tax you paid (and any 2307 credits) in earlier quarters, so you're never taxed twice on the same peso.
This calculator gives an estimate for one quarterly return and doesn’t replace a full return: it leaves out 2307 withholding credits. Mixed-income earners (a salary plus freelance income) don’t get the ₱250,000 exemption on their freelance side — see the 8% tax rate explained for the full rules. Create a free account and RaketTax carries your running totals across every quarter automatically.
